System Unit

System Unit or Chassis is a case that contains electronic 

component of a computer used to process data.

Motherboard

Component of the System Unit

Motherboard

Motherboard is the main circuit board of the system unit.

It consist of three main component:

• Processor Slot

Processor Slot

Processor Slot is a connector on the motherboard

that houses CPU and forms the electrical interface

and contact with the CPU.

• Memory Slot

Memory Slot

          Memory Slot is a slot on the motherboard 
          that hold memory modules that are

• Adapter Card/Expansion Slot

          Adapter Card Slot or Expansion Card Slot is a slot

          on the motherboard that can hold adapter cards.

Processor

Processor/Central Processing Unit

Processor interprets and carries out the
basic instruction that operate a computer.

There are two component of processor:

• Control Unit(CU)

          Control Unit directs and coordinates
          most of operations in the computer.

• Arithmetic Logic Unit(ALU)

          ALU perform arithmetic operation and performs
          logical operation.



Adapter Card
Adapter Card is a circuit board that enhances functions of the
component of the system unit and provides connections to
peripherals.

Types of Adapter Card:

• Bluetooth Card

          -connects Bluetooth device by transmitting
           and receiving Bluetooth wireless signals.

• MIDI Card

          -connects musical instrument.

• Modem Card

         -connects other computers through telephone or
          cable television line.

• Network Card

          -connects other computers and peripherals.

• Sound Card

          -connects speaker or a microphone.

• USB Card

          -connects to USB device.

• Video/Graphic Card

           -connects a monitor

• Video Capture Card

          -connects a camcorder.                                                                                                                                                                    

Memory
Memory consist of electronic components that
stores instructions waiting to be executed by
the processor, data needed by those instructions,
and the results of processing the data.

There are two types of memory:

RAM

      Volatile memory

• a temporary memory  that loses its content when 

          the power is turned off.

• example: Random Access Memory, RAM

      Non-Volatile memory

ROM

• permanent memory that does not loses

          its content when the power is turned off.

• example: Read Only Memory, ROM
